My sister's cat unfortunately died about six weeks ago (which was not exactly unexpected since she'd been getting pretty old, but sad none the less). My cat, Muffna*, took to wondering around the house and meowing loudly (which is a lot unlike her) in search of her friend, and oscillating between periods of being extremely social (which is also very much unlike her) and only coming home twice a day to get a meal.
We decided to get a new kitten and we finally did. (We didn't want to pay for a cat since there are so many unwanted or accidental kittens that struggle to find a home but my sister also insisted that the kitten was long-haired.)
We brought the kitty home last tuesday and she is a delight. Insanely cute with her ridiculously round eyes and overly social. She doesn't seem to miss her previous home all that much and she keeps following us around the house, never staying in a room alone for long.
My cat hasn't exactly given her a warm greeting but that was only to be expected. What I didn't really expect was Muffna being pissed off at me - she didn't even want to take her favorite treat from me... Like, complete ignoration. (the reaction was much the same as when I first brought my boyfriend home and she found out she wouldn't be sleeping in my bed for the night.)
Hopefully though, they will get used to each other eventually. Also, Muffna is no longer grieving. Nowadays she's mostly acting normal unless the kitten is in sight which just makes her hiss, spit and instantly leave the house.
Oh, and one last thing. I still can't get over this - My sister named the kitten "Či Či" (read [Chi Chi])... which is what you call any random cat when you approach it... In translation it is not unlike naming her "Here, Kitty Kitty".
*Like female Muffin... it also sounds funny in Czech and apparently (as I only found out months after I got the cat), "mufna" is something used for sticking pipes together...
